Doing the right thing gets you nothing but trouble

If one chooses to live according to one's true principles as much as possible, then surely one cannot avoid the local day-to-day situations where you find yourself in amongst a bunch of people who are acting so far from the ideals you hold dear, how can you not act if you see something, if you feel that you could perhaps be of any help?

I found myself in a situation just that yesterday as I was on the bus back from the studio. I was sitting on the bus talking to a friend listening to possibly the foulest example of 'working class' peasants squabbling helplessly amongst themselves. Crammed onto a large metal vehicle with seats small enough to only just fit on, tightly packed into neat lines amongst the coughs, snot and filth that spews from their bodies. This is my bus journey home from uni. The summary of the situation is three fully grown men were clearly intoxicated - at about 4 in the afternoon - sitting on the back of a bus, riling up a poor young girl, about 20-21? who was clearly having problems raising and disciplining her three kids, no father in sight. But she was obviously able to stand up for herself; clearly hardened by her environment, she ended up launching a tirade of anger towards one man in particular who was the most intoxicated and unpleasant. She got off the bus with her three kids and then like the coward he was, he then proceeded to loudly and vilely slag her off to the whole bus, everyone simply trying to get home from a long days work, and to top it off, another bunch of little kids got on and sat in the same seats just in front of them. It got to the point where I couldn't stand just listening anymore, out of nowhere I said something along the lines of, "Come on mate, there's little kids sitting right there, you can't really be talking as if there's only adults around." and in response I received a tirade of abuse and hollow incoherent excuses,

 "WHAT! HU DA FUK DO YI THINK YI ARE LYK? WOT DA FUK HAS IT GOT TO DO WITH YOU, YOU GINGER CUNT!", "I DIDNT EVEN KNA THA WUS KIDS THERE MAN" and "Who the fuck does this kid think he is?!? I gan sarve me cuntry n come back n get this fuckn shite, FUCK ME MAN" - hahaha, this was one of the funniest.

But basically, I intended to try and shelter these innocent kids from the harsh, brutal world that is the north east of England and in doing so almost got into a fight with three idiots who were telling me, "you wanna hope you don't get off at the same stop as us" so I ended up negating my whole argument slightly by swearing at them and stating "I divn't give a fuck if I do, I'm not scared mate.", but - why should one waste good manners and intelligence on such sacks of decaying filth? It would be wasted.

I allowed myself to succumb to anger but I was doing the right thing. After they got off the bus, the whole bus just felt a lot easier, atmosphere-wise. I could tell everyone else was thinking exactly what I was, but everyone is too cowardly to say anything. I believe this to be quite significant in the bigger picture of things, as if you don't speak out when you see injustice and things that you could perhaps change for the better, you have become part of the problem. The wider problem our planet faces; the enormous blob of ignorance present amongst our species in 2013. Fuck. People want someone else to speak out, and never want to themselves because it may just rock their cushty little bubble they have going for themselves. This is a huge problem. I ended up shouting at men in front of me, "where was your opinion on the matter there?!? where's your balls? where's your spines? this is the problem, when we see things that are wrong we don't speak out against them", then one of the guys montioned towards me showing me a cast and an uncomfortable smile towards me as to say "that's my excuse", and I obviously understand, but the rest of the bus was full of men who were not willing to speak out, not even when someone else does, they aren't even willing to back the person who has the balls to speak out. We're fucked. 'We're' meaning lower class peoples.

Men are no longer real 'men'. And women are no longer real 'women', they're victims (as a whole).

I feel like a lion amongst a bunch of cowardly hyenas.

I urge you all to speak out every time you see an injustice, and to support those who do. We can make our world a better place, we just need to start doing it at a local level. Help those around you if you are fortunate enough to be able to see heir plight and the causes which have burdened them with such problems. WE need to do something.

I guarantee every person I speak to in the street would know who Kate Middleton is, but would they know what The Bilderberg Group is? would they know what autonomous drone warfare entails? I sadly think not.

Ignorance is our biggest problem in today's world. People are just too happy to turn off the world and submerge themselves in a matrix of false cinematic visions - created for the very purpose of keeping you ignorant.

Good news! I rang my water company and they inform me that my water supply is not fluoridated and is not set to be, like the media was saying. I think the expansions are only in certain other places. But it's bizarre, why only have it in certain parts?

The following UK water utility companies fluoridate their supply:

Northumbrian water is who I was in touch with, they only fluoridate parts of Gateshead and Tyneside apparently. Why? the woman I spoke to was completely clueless, seemed a bit of an epsilon but she was cool. I told her about fluoride, studies etc. and she was speechless, she had heard some concerns before but she didn't seem to care. She said something like "well sir, I live in an area which is fluoridated and..-took a thoughtful pause-..I don't really have an opinion on it " it shocked me, but she seemed concerned slightly with the information I gave her. I urged her to check out the website fluoridealert.org, as surely after a 30 minute browse on this site your opinion will take shape as fast as if you had just seen a jaguar two feet away from you. It amounts to something of the exact same nature.

If you have an insect infestation right outside your house, what do you do? I suppose it depends on what insect it is, but say it's ants - do you go and try and stamp on them and kill them all outright? probably not cause most of them will escape. A much more effective way is to lay down some sweet poison for them, a poison which smells and looks nice to them, possibly resembling food, they will eat it and even take it to feed their queen cause it seems so pleasant. Then all of them will be taken care of slowly but surely.

First hand experience of how bullshit the mainstream media really are. On January 29th, 2011 I attended a student protest in Manchester. Events unfolded, I ended up getting my hands bound with metal and locked in a concrete box. One of the worst and best memories of my entire life.

I ended up being stranded in Manchester by myself with no way of getting home - but somehow ended up in a warm bed for the night with hot food and to top it off, a coach e-ticket home for the morning. My heart goes out to the people who came to my aid when I needed it most. I remember vividly, getting released from the police station into a dark cold city I knew nothing of, but shortly after I was released, I was contacted by people who were coming to pick me up to take me to a house they had. They were two females, vegans most definitely. They arrived at a location to pick me up in a small car and took me to a pub, when I entered the pub the girls lead the way proclaiming to others who were already there as I walked in, 'Jamie's free!' which was then followed by a loud chorus of cheers and shouts from all directions, tens of smiling faces all delighted at my release, people who I had never even met. This really showed me something about people, people are good. There is hope for humanity yet.

But that's not it, it says..

"They were chased by mounted police as they ran through the streets. Protesters, some wearing balaclavas, wrestled with police on the ground." - The only person 'wrestling' on the ground was me, and I was not wearing a balaclava.


"Scotland Yard said four arrests were made during the course of the protest.
Three people were held on suspicion of criminal damage, while another was detained on suspicion of assaulting a police officer." - That is absolutely false, I was not arrested on suspicion of assaulting a police officer, and I had not been suspected of criminal damage. This is a perfect personification of how media giants, no matter what the truth may be, prevail with dogshit. People prevail with kindness and truth.

Visual Analysis assignment: Shibboleth by Doris Salcedo           Jamie Evans

Doris Salcedo is a Colombian artist who was born 1958. Before executing a visual analysis on her piece, Shibboleth, (2007), I think it is important to acknowledge the implications of her origin, especially in reference to her exhibiting in one of the biggest and most prestigious art venues in the Western world. Columbia is a country well known to have a high rate of drug and gang violence. Bogota, the third largest city in Latin America was once known to be one of the most violent cities in the world(1) , this is where Doris Salcedo studied at the university of Bogota for her Bachelors in Fine Arts. Considering how an artist from an area such as Colombia would feel in the entirely different environment such as London, is important.
The artist herself states  that her piece "represents borders, the experience of immigrants, the experience of segregation, the experience of racial hatred. It is the experience of a Third World person coming into the heart of Europe"(2). I interpret this would be from a politically conscious individual, who wishes to try and disperse these views through her art. A noble value of an artist, a one which I admire greatly. However, I cannot unfortunately agree with the notion that this piece in particular brings these things into question. I expect that there was some naiveness on behalf of Salcedo, as to the nature of the overall zeitgeist that Tate Modern pushes. Tate Modern states very clearly, "We will continue to bring the Tate brand and vision to life through books, products and services, encouraging customers to enjoy spending more money in new and different ways.Customers will see us as exciting, innovative, collaborative and responsive."(3) I think the key here, is in the term 'customers will see us as..'. The implication that visitors to this gallery are not in fact visitors to a gallery, people coming to look at, enjoy and value art; they are customers. This is indicative of Tate Moderns true nature, it is simply a business out to make as much money as it possibly can. It has no allegiance to art, other than having a lot of money to purchase it. Just like the corporations and sponsors it gets on so well with, one of the most insidious being BP. When I visited Tate Modern late 2012, as I walked around I saw advertisements and the logo for BP, in multiple different locations. An oil company who is responsible for the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, and also responsible for the exploitation of our planets resources for profit has no place in an art gallery, except if you're Tate Modern. It is also an interesting side note, that the person who officially opened Tate Modern was the Queen of England.
Bearing all this in mind, one finds it hard to understand how Salcedo thought she would be allowed to exhibit any artwork which truly, "represents borders, the experience of immigrants, the experience of segregation, the experience of racial hatred." (2)
How is one able to highlight such issues from the confines of a house of someone who is complicit in contributing and establishing such things? I would argue that such an act is impossible - unless it is done in a manner in which the host has absolutely no prior knowledge of what is going to be shown, no input artistically and no influence in the actual artwork. Something which cannot be said for Shibboleth, as even creating a simple crack in the floor of Tate Modern came with a hefty £300,000 price tag.(4) Salcedo has even chosen to keep the creative process of the artwork a secret, saying that "What is important is the meaning of the piece. The making of it is not important"(2) Why is it not important?
This seems to be a ridiculous waste of money, for if one wanted to create a crack in the floor of Tate Modern, one would simply need a sledgehammer and a big chisel, something which could be purchased for a miniscule fraction of what the actual cost was. But, I expect that this would have been entirely out of the question. A uniform, minimal crack, which undoubtedly looks like a crack, is the only satisfactory option that Tate Modern could allow. Considering the artwork which was exhibited in the Turbine Hall at Tate Modern just previous to Salcedo's work, was Matthew Pillsburys 'slides in the turbine hall'. This specific exhibition site had been cast to the general public as a 'fun fun' space, hardly somewhere where an artwork with such political content would be understood. People were interacting with the crack that Salcedo created the same way they would with slides, instead of standing back and looking at it as a hazard. Children would lose their shoes down it. Spending hundreds of thousands of pounds on an artwork alone is one thing, especially with Salcedo coming from a country in which a staggering one billion people live in extreme poverty, but to spend hundreds of thousands on creating something which is meant to be created in an act of uncontrolled violence, an act of nature, like an earthquake splitting the solidity of the stone of the floor, it seems very artificial. This solidifies my observation that Doris Salcedo was naive in thinking that the true meaning of the artwork would be allowed to be conveyed. It also forces me to question her authenticity as an artist.
This fits perfectly with the trend that has been present throughout capitalist history. The tendency that capitalism, or large parts of the capitalist system has of picking up any critics of the consequences of the capitalist system and then getting behind whomever it may be, in a highly deceptive manner and helping propel them into 'fame'. Then, once this is achieved, it has the effect of swallowing up whatever it had once claimed to stand next to. The swallowing up of any critical dialogue of the fundamentals of how society is structured and spitting it out in a completely non-violent form is effectively what has been done. I see it as an unavoidable consequence of legitimizing the enemy.
This is something which 'Sir' Nicholas Serota touches upon in the interview for the BBC's Culture Show with art critic Matt Collings, he states "Once art enters an institution of this kind, it's very, very difficult for us to preserve it's cutting edge. It becomes absorbed so quickly. We do our best. But, erm.. there is an institutional.. erm.. way of somehow absorbing the most..erm.. troublesome artist or work of art, and our responsibility is to try not to let that happen too quickly, or too easily." (6) There it is stated plainly. Tate Moderns responsibility is to not let this absorption happen too quickly, or too easily, but to absorb nonetheless.
The word 'Shibboleth' means "a custom, principle, or belief distinguishing a particular class or group of people, especially a long-standing one regarded as outmoded or no longer important"(7). In relation to this artwork, I struggle to find a clear cut implication of this title, other than the implication that art institutions such as Tate Modern are outmoded, or no longer important. If this is what was being asserted, through Doris Salcedo's Shibboleth,(2007) then the very act of co-operating and engaging with these institutions gives them the validity to exist - an act which is conflicted with her stated intentions, so much that it has the effect of sterilizing her artworks intended message entirely.
